Hiking Angel’s Landing!

Angel's Landing is a breathtaking hike located in the inspiring Zion National Park. The hike is an adventure that will take you on a journey to the top of a towering sandstone peak, offering panoramic views of the surrounding canyon that will leave you speechless. The trail is 5.4 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 1,488 feet, and it will test your endurance and determination as you navigate steep switchbacks and a narrow, exposed spine with steep drop-offs on either side. The final destination is a narrow sandstone ridge that will reward you with a sense of accomplishment and a view that you will remember forever. It's a hike not for the faint of heart, but for those who want to push themselves to new heights and experience the beauty of nature in its purest form. Permit Information (Self-Guided)

Starting on April 2022 anyone who hikes Angel’s Landing needs to obtain a permit. Permits are required 24 hours a day, seven days a week to hike any portion of Angel’s Landing trail from Scout’s Lookout. There are two options to obtain a permit and hike Angel’s Landing, the first is to obtain a permit on your own from recreation.gov and the second is to hire a guide company that has permits available for the date you wish to hike.

How to get an Angel’s Landing Permit:

  1. Click HERE to access the recreation.gov website.

  2. Choose either “Seasonal Lottery” or “Day Before Lottery” link.

  3. Click the blue “Register for Lottery” button.

  4. Create an account or log in.

  5. Choose your date and pay. Paying for a permit does not guarantee you will be awarded one. You will be notified via email.

What are the Fees?

The lottery Application Fee is $6 which is non-refundable. Each issued permit will be charged an additional $3 per person.

If you are unable to secure a permit, you can still hire an Angel’s Landing guide to escort you up to the summit of Angel’s Landing.

Questions about Zion’s Angels Landing

  • Yes, since 2022, all hikers going beyond Scout Lookout (the narrow, chain-supported final half‑mile) must have a permit. Permits are issued via a seasonal lottery and a day-before lottery. If you don’t have a permit, you can still hike Angels Landing with a local guide like Zion Guide Hub. Angels Landing is only allowed to be guided on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

  • Angels Landing is considered a strenuous hike due to its steep elevation gain, narrow ridgelines, and exposed drop-offs. However, our guided tour is paced for your comfort, and your guide will provide support, tips, and rest breaks along the way to help make the experience achievable and rewarding.

  • Seasonal lottery: Apply two months in advance (open from the 1st to the 20th of each month). Day-before lottery: Enter the day prior between 12 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mountain Time - Results are sent by 4 p.m. There’s a $6 application fee, and a $3 fee per person if selected.

  • Your tour includes a knowledgeable, safety-certified guide, a permit for the chains section, lunch, and optional trekking poles or micro spikes (winter only). We’ll also provide expert insight into the park’s geology, ecology, and natural history during the hike.

  • The hike is approximately 5.4 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of over 1,400 feet. Our tour is booked as a full-day 8 hour tour but that includes travel time to and from the trailhead. The Angels Landing hike typically last around 5-6 hours, depending on group pace and trail conditions.

  • The final half-mile of Angels Landing features steep drop-offs and narrow ledges, which may be challenging for those with a fear of heights. Your guide will help assess your comfort level and can offer alternative options if needed. The hike up to Scout Lookout still offers incredible views and is a great option for anyone not continuing to the summit.

  • We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good traction. Bring a small backpack with at least 2 liters of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a lightweight jacket or layer depending on the season.

  • This tour is best suited for active individuals ages 12 and up who are comfortable with heights and steep terrain. While our guides tailor the pace and offer support, participants should have a good fitness level and no major mobility limitations.

  • Safety is our top priority. In the case of severe weather or trail closures, we will contact you as soon as possible to offer alternative hikes or reschedule your tour. Rainy conditions do not automatically result in tour cancellation. Zion remains a remarkable and scenic experience during rainfall, provided conditions remain within safe and manageable levels. Zion offers many stunning trails and experiences, and we’ll ensure you still have an unforgettable adventure.

    • Spring and Fall: Ideal conditions with mild weather.

    • Summer: Start early to avoid extreme heat and afternoon thunderstorms.

    • Winter: Snow and ice are common. Bring traction devices like micro-spikes

  • The hike begins at The Grotto, which is Shuttle Stop #6 in Zion Canyon. The shuttle is required in peak season. In winter, private vehicles are allowed however parking is limited.
